CUIRTECA is a living archive of Latin American queer cinema. The project began three years ago through the research developed for a workshop on the history of Latin American queer cinema, presented as part of the Vierte Welle Film Festival in Berlin. It also grew out of my curatorial work within the festival, a process that allowed me to discover a new dimension of my practice as a documentary filmmaker.
During this research, I encountered a wide range of films alongside the political contexts, censorship, and forms of resistance surrounding their production and circulation. In many cases, finding reliable information was difficult. A significant part of the work still remains: tracing short films, underground productions, and works that were forgotten, lost, or severely censored in their countries of origin.
The archive currently brings together more than 200 films produced between the 1920s and the 2020s. The collection can be explored by decade, genre, and country, and also includes biographies of filmmakers.
CUIRTECA is incomplete by definition. It is a collective and constantly expanding project, conceived as a space for research, preservation, circulation, and the construction of queer audiovisual memory.

CUIRTECA es un archivo vivo de cine cuir latinoamericano. El proyecto nació hace tres años a partir de la investigación desarrollada para un taller sobre Historia del Cine Cuir Latinoamericano, realizado en el marco del Vierte Welle Film Festival en Berlín. También surgió de mi trabajo curatorial dentro del festival, un proceso que me permitió descubrir una nueva dimensión de mi práctica como documentalista.
Durante esta investigación encontré una gran diversidad de películas, junto con las historias políticas, las censuras y las formas de resistencia que atravesaron su producción y circulación. En muchos casos, acceder a información confiable no fue sencillo. Una parte fundamental del trabajo todavía está pendiente: rastrear cortometrajes, producciones clandestinas y obras que fueron olvidadas, perdidas o brutalmente censuradas en sus países de origen.
Actualmente, el archivo reúne más de 200 películas producidas entre las décadas de 1920 y 2020. La colección puede recorrerse por década, género y país, e incluye también biografías de cineastas.
CUIRTECA es un proyecto incompleto por definición, colectivo y en permanente expansión. Fue concebido como un espacio de investigación, preservación, circulación y construcción de memoria audiovisual cuir.
